About

boot.log

[ 0.000] Hands-on solutions architect and systems engineer with 20+ years across networking, infrastructure, data platforms and software delivery.

[ 0.042] Co-founded and still own a South African Tier-1 ISP and voice network. Built an IoT telemetry platform ingesting 15,000 smart meters.

[ 0.084] Now lead global infrastructure for a video and voice data-annotation business: multi-region ingest and a 2 PB/month transcoding pipeline.

[ 0.126] Used to owning the full stack end to end, from hardware and BGP to Python ETL and BI, often as the sole engineer responsible for getting it to production.

    Network Operations Manager

    World Defense Show 2026

Ran the show-floor network for one of the world’s largest defence exhibitions, across the halls of the Riyadh Exhibition & Convention Center.

    • Core: a pair of Catalyst 9500-48Y4C in StackWise Virtual with SSO, dual-active detection and 25G SVLs on IOS-XE 17.15, DNA Advantage.
    • 18 switches directly off the core over 36 CDP adjacencies: two 9500 hall distribution switches, eleven 9300-48P access stacks, two server farms, IPTV, plus Hall 3 wireless controllers and dual firewalls, all dual-homed to both chassis over 25G LACP bundles with Rapid-PVST loop guard and UDLD underneath.
    • Around 25 VLANs with central DHCP: tiered exhibitor bandwidth (5 to 100 Mbps), delegates, Royal and VIP, staff, media, radios, BMS, PA/VA, multicast-routed IPTV, show-control CCTV and a /17 guest Wi-Fi network for 30,000+ visitors.
    • SNMPv3, syslog and NTP into PRTG; live topology captured from CDP into version-controlled configs and diagrams.

    Global Infrastructure Lead

    Beatpulse Labs

Client-facing video and voice data-annotation business, and the ingest, storage and processing platform behind it.

    • International video ingestion network with Tier-1 peering to AWS, Azure and Cloudflare for low-latency multi-region ingest.
    • Pipeline behind ML-based metadata tagging and 2 PB/month of transcoding under strict SLAs, on a GPU transcode fleet.
    • Multi-node MinIO object storage; migrated Azure Blob in, now moving the archive to Backblaze B2.
    • ETL/ELT into curated BI datasets with data-quality checks and alerting that cut failed jobs and reprocessing time.
  4. Dec 2022 – Jul 2025Johannesburg

    Chief Systems Architect

    Nuvo Energy Africa

    • End-to-end telemetry platform: 15,000 smart-meter and solar endpoints at 4 events/min over MQTT into TimescaleDB and InfluxDB.
    • ESP32- and ARM-based endpoint hardware collating RS485, CAN-bus and Zigbee; load-control hardware for solar arbitrage.
    • Python ETL, star schemas for usage, tariffs and site performance, Power BI dashboards with row-level security and CI/CD.
  5. Jan 2015 – PresentJohannesburg

    Co-founder & Technical Director

    Desktop Group (Pty) Ltd

    • Built a Tier-1 ISP and voice network serving major South African metros, with BGP multihoming across carriers.
    • On-prem and cloud data-centre platforms with backup/DR, encryption and RBAC at 99.9% availability.
    • MySQL-backed voice billing engine rating 13,000 inter-network routes per second.
